10 Tips for What to Wear for Engagement Pics and What to Avoid

Oh my gosh! You’re getting married!!! I’m so freaking excited for you! If you’re already planning what to wear for your engagement pics, you’re in the right place! As a destination wedding photographer, I’ve had the honor of capturing tons of engagement photoshoots, so I’ve picked up some tips on the best attire for engagement photos—and what to avoid!

Engagement Picture Outfits: The Do’s and Don’ts

Let’s be honest, deciding what clothes to wear for engagement shoots can be so stressful! So, I am going to share 10 tips to consider when planning what to wear for your engagement pics!

1. Wedding/Elopement Colors

If you’ve already decided on your wedding colors, it makes choosing your engagement picture outfits a breeze! You can coordinate your outfits to complement the color palette you’ll be using on your big day, creating a cohesive look from engagement to wedding. Plus, it helps set the tone and vibe for your entire wedding journey, making everything feel more connected and intentional. Whether you go for subtle accents or bold pops of your wedding colors, having that theme in mind gives you a solid starting point for planning your outfits.

2. Consider Your Location

If you take anything away from this blog, let it be this: your clothes for your engagement photos need to pair well with your location! I always love to help my couples with planning outfits based on their location because you never want to be too matchy-matchy with your scenery or each other!

3. Bring Extra Engagement Photo Outfits

Want to have a blend of casual and dressy for your engagement photos? You can easily switch into a new outfit during your engagement shoot when you plan ahead!

For the Girls: Mix up a casual look with jeans or a skirt with a cute top and then switch into a flowy dress later.

For the Guys: Pack 2 options for shirts so that you can get a mix of photos that pair well with your partner!

4. What Color Should I Wear for My Engagement Photos?

I’m so glad you asked! My answer is… it depends. I truly believe that neutrals work so incredibly well if you are planning for an outdoor engagement photoshoot. I can guarantee it doesn’t take the focus away from the scenery. However, I also love a pop of color! I always recommend coordinating with your photographer if you’re unsure about what colors you are considering because we will be able to let you know what is going to work well or not based on the location, season, and time of the shoot!

5. Don’t Forget Accessories!

Accessories are such a fun way to add dimension to your engagement photos! Whether it’s a hat, fun earrings, sunglasses, umbrella – you name it! This is another fun way to create a diverse gallery in the end because you can easily remove accessories throughout the shoot!

6. Timeless Outfit Choice

There is nothing worse than looking back at old photos and cringing at your outfit choice. Choose outfits that are timeless and won’t look dated in the future. While adding trendy elements is fun, make sure the overall look remains classic.

7. Plan for the Season

Depending on the season, you’re going to want to prepare for the weather elements and the seasonal foliage. With the season, comes the challenge with different weather conditions! Plan to bring extra shoes if hiking/there is snow, layers if the weather conditions change, umbrellas if it’s a rainy season.

P.s. Don’t forget to check the weather forecast the week of, day before, and day of!

8. Always Choose Comfort!!

When in doubt, opt for comfort! If you are uncomfortable with what you are wearing, you will be able to tell in your photos and we don’t want that to happen! So, focus on clothing that feels good for you and true to your personality!

9. Hair and Makeup

Think about treating yourself to professional hair and makeup for a polished look that enhances your features and perfectly complements your outfit!

Pro Tip: Plan your hair and makeup in a similar way as your wedding day so that you can have a trial run so you can see how it will look for your wedding day photos!

10. Show Off You!

Whether it’s rocking form-fitting clothes that flaunt your unique body shape or proudly showing off your amazing tattoos—don’t be afraid to show up as your unapologetic self! After all, these are your engagement photos, so make them all about you!

Avoid Making These Mistakes for Your Engagement Outfits!

  • Wearing something that you are truly not comfortable in. If your outfit does not mesh well with your personality, don’t wear it!
  • Patterns!! Whatever you do, steer clear of patterns that clash with one another! If you are planning on wearing an engagement outfit with a pattern, your partner should stick with a solid option!
  • An outfit that doesn’t compliment your skin tone.
  • Something you will never wear again.
